The brother and sister duo who have produced this hard covered children’s book are among several authors and illustrators who identify closely to First Nations culture. All of these books have been beautifully presented with colourful educational material for primary school age students.
Victor Steffensen is an indigenous writer, musician, film maker and consultant. His work shows how traditional knowledge and values can be incorporated into contemporary settings. The illustrations on the pages of which this story is told show Australia’s flora and fauna and how important it is to protect them.
The author tells the reader that this book is for all who share the land with the animal world. Respect for elders and their knowledge is highlighted as reading this book becomes a walk through the bush to learn about the animals from Uncle Kuu. He explains tracks on the ground and talks about totem animals which are under the protection of individuals. Keeping these animals healthy means keeping the environment healthy.
Although Aboriginal people ate different animals, not their totem, the book explains that this is done with respect and thanks and that only what is needed to feed themselves is taken. They follow what they believe is the natural food chain created by Mother Nature, which also dictates seasonal hunting activities. This ensures that there will be plenty of food into the future.
Throughout the text important words are highlighted in larger font in a different colour. The story finishes with the words and music of a song about animals.
This book would be of great benefit in primary school classrooms because of its educational content. It speaks directly to its audience and involves them with the music. Its contents can also lead to further discussion and projects to involve the students.
This is another well presented picture book which incorporates nurturing values for all to hear.
